There is no pressing need to include chest irradiation with combination chemotherapy , but radiotherapy may relieve symptoms caused by the primary tumor or metastatic disease. For example, symptoms from brain metastases and pain from bone metastases can be promptly relieved with radiation.
If the superior vena cava syndrome is present, chest irradiation may result in a very rapid initial response.
